2012 was a year, wasn't it? I am still an unemployed graduate, so let's not talk about that, but this year stretches out shiny and empty before us and I am determined to make it better. If I get a job, it will be much better instantly, and if we follow plan A (my plan A, Lali's plan B) it will be super awesome.

I hope you had a great time celebrating over the holiday season, whatever you celebrated, and may 2013 bring you shiny things and much delight.

So yesterday morning I was in Hay-on-Wye, doing the bakery round. This morning I was in Halifax with my parents, aunt and cousin, and this afternoon I was in Slaithwaite (Slawit) watching morris dancing. Now I am in York again, but sorting out fic has not happened as much as it should have, partly because I have yet another job interview tomorrow morning. It's all go, apart from the fic. I do have lots to post, though, which is sort of exciting.

In the last few days I have ticked off Wales and England; Hay-On-Wye, Birmingham, Leeds, Halifax, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield and finally York, and that's just the towns I've set foot in, and discounting the ones I merely passed through. Tired Fiwen is tired, and should really go to bed and have anxiety dreams to properly prepare her.

Also, I have just been presented with a white chocolate mousse.

After a frankly ridiculous month, both [livejournal.com profile] laligin and I have made it to the 50000 word mark. I gace up after a week, restarted with Torchwood fanfic on the tenth, had three 0 word days and made it with ease. Why did I ever consider leaving it?

It'll be up soon, I hope.

So because I've got 19 hours in my signing session next week, I have to sign off. But I can get Working Tax Credit.

Then the following week I can sign back on, and sign off WTC...

This is why people don't bother getting work experience through temping, because it's such a fucking stupid system. When I rule the world there will be one benefit for people who do casual work, and what they get will depend on how many hours they work, and all they'll have to do is fill in the form with their hours.

Funny thing, though. I'll get more from them as WTC than I do as Jobseeker's Allowance when I get a few hours. Just need to find out what it means for Council Tax benefits.

Right now I am annoyed, so I am going to buy food and have cake and then apply for many jobs.

The floodwaters have receded in York - although they got a lot higher than they were when I was taking photos - and the river has given up the barge it stole. She's called Ermintrude, apparently, and she looked very sad as she emerged. The problem with the Ouse is that, even this far inland, it's tidal. So when you think it's dropped a bit, you realise that that was low tide and it's not actually dropped as far as you think, or it may even have risen a bit. Two weeks it took from starting to rise to dropping back to something approaching normal levels. I'm used to the Calder, which is incredibly flashy (that actually is the technical term) and the floodwaters can disappear overnight and leave the river crystal clear. The Ouse is nothing like that - it's always silty and slow, slow to rise and slow to fall. It's gone for now, but I'll be very surprised if that lasts the winter.

I'm still unemployed, and I've heard back from all my interviews. I have another on Monday, and I've done a bit of temping, but for the moment it's still pretty empty. The upside of this, of course, is that I have time on my hands. It's nearly NaNo, so I've been plotting and preparing, and I have also written a whole chapter of my on-hiatus monster Torchwood fanfiction. I'm going to get another couple of chapters done and get into the rhythm before I start posting, having done a chapter here and a chapter there for about two years, but I'm really hopeful this time. NaNo will kick start me.

Speaking of NaNo, one of our very good friends from the Yorkshire region has a graphic novel out with Titan. He wrote the final comic strip in the Torchwood magazine, and now has a detective noir novel called Harker out. It's pretty damn awesome, and he's a cool dude, so you should check it out. If you're going to New York Comic Con, you should go and see him, too, because he's trading York for New York for the convention. His name's Rog Gibson, and he'll be on the Titan stand, so if you're there you should go and say hi and tell him Gala and Lali sent you.

He'll probably tell you that the deathbat is coming for you, but you don't need to worry about that, we've got it covered.

And it's now quarter past eleven, and I should make Lali go to bed and rest her injured... we don't have time for that list. Too much furniture removal lately, and not enough sleep. Tomorrow will be a day of writing, if I get my way. So for now, adieu.

Do you want to see photos?

So yes, weather awful, but York is pretty good at dealing with this sort of thing. Most people are safely above the waterline here, unlike other places, although the hotel I took photos of (that was getting people in and out on a luggage trolley) was closing because of the flooding.

So hi! I can't actually believe how long it's been since I was on LiveJournal properly. It's been a bit mad the last few months. Job applications and festivals and tidying and all sorts of busyness.

Tl;dr: Great bands - Demon Barber Roadshow and The Albion Band especially good. White Rose have a new dance. I have a new top hat.

Pictures to follow when I've dealt with them.

It's been a while. Over a month since my last update, in fact. I've finished all my uni work, thank goodness, and I'm now waiting for my results to find out how I've done. The last few, dissertation, exam and two reports, were all due in within a fortnight of each other, but we got an extension on one of them. It's all done, though.

I've got a conference, a festival, a couple of trips, Eleventh Hour and God only knows what else coming up. All the while I'm starting to apply for jobs, waiting to hear back from the job I really, really want, and generally starting to get Real Life (tm) going again. Need housework and sleep and food. I'll do a proper update soon, once I've got a better handle on what's going on.

But, thing is, I've been away for ages and there is no way I can catch up on my flist, so what is your news? Pull up a seat, grab a cup of tea and a slice of cake if you so wish and let's catch up :) (Suggestions of offline catch-ups are most welcome, but I can't really do anything about them until July at the earliest. Unless you're doing 11th Hour, in which case [livejournal.com profile] laligin and I will see you there.

Still alive. Still working on my dissertation. Oh god, don't expect to see anything much from me in the next month, because I am nowhere near where I need to be on any of my three final assignments. Unexpected sunshine in March is wonderful, but not helpful.

As an apology for my prolonged absence, have a video of Yorkshire. It was premiered at a conference I went to, and it's just gorgeous. I live here you guys! I live in this astonishingly, jaw-droppingly beautiful place.

I'm going to be closing the poll on Torchwood-related tourism in Cardiff this coming Friday (23.03), so if anyone still wants to be involved and hasn't filled in the survey, now's the time to do it.

The survey is here.

Thanks so much to everyone who's already filled it in. You're the best.

Hiya. Still alive. In two months and three days I will have finished my course. Bloody hell.

So yeah, there might still be a distinct lack of Me around for the next two months and... a bit. I'm just about ready to start pulling my dissertation together, my other modules are going well although I'm not getting much out of lectures for either of them, Lali goes to her new job on Monday and we get afternoons back, I'm gleeing all over Sherlock fandom like you wouldn't believe...

Yeah, I think that's about it. I'm alive, happy, working hard, can see the end of the tunnel at last.

Two months. Bloody hell

It's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.

There are no words for how much I love the Muppets. I was 6 when they were last on TV (in a way that I could watch them, anyway), and I remember standing in the doorway of a stranger's living room, cuddling a kitten and watching the Muppet Show because we'd gone to choose a kitten on a Sunday night and I was annoyed about missing it. Definite formative memory there, and Treasure Island was my favourite film when I was growing up.

So [livejournal.com profile] laligin, her housemate and I went to see the Muppets on Sunday night. And then I went to see it on Monday morning, and Lali and I went again last night, and I'm planning to go again tonight. For comparison, the only film I have ever seen in the cinema more than once is Return of the King, and that was because we went with the church youth group and then again with my family.

I really, really love the Muppets.

It's a wonderful film, full of lots of my favourite music, so many laugh out loud moments, and ALL MY CHILDHOOD

Cut for spoilery shipping )

Pleeeeeease can we have the Muppet Show back? Even reruns, I don't care, just bring them back!

I'm looking for your opinions on Ianto's Shrine in Cardiff Bay here. And, as always, I'm looking for more people to fill in the poll here.

I'm also wondering if anyone would be interested in knowing more about what I'm doing and the theories behind it? I've not expanded on it in the community because I don't want to affect the results, but if you think it would be interesting I'm more than happy to do so.

I am somewhat tired of people saying that the original Irene was so much more awesome than the modern one, and that the modern one is so misogynistic. Just in case anyone hasn't seen it )Irene Adler is a bamf, and she's off having adventures with Lady Christina de Souza and River Song.

I'm a bit out of it at the moment. Don't cope well with the cold, as you probably know by now, but I've been getting out more than I usually do because I've been going to see [livejournal.com profile] laligin. I only have two days at uni this year, which means starting at 9 on Tuesdays and finishing at 6.30 with a three hour gap in the middle, but also means that my motivation on the other days is negligible.

Even fic isn't really picking me up. I'm head over heels for Mycroft/Lestrade at the moment, and I have loads of stories I want to write, but it just seems... I dunno, I just can't actually make myself do it. Pen to paper is going better than fingers to keyboard, but it's still not really happening. I'm really, really glad I decided to go on hiatus, because the last thing I need is any pressure on that front.

Do need pressure on the university front, though. For my dissertation, I've got about half the responses I need on my survey, and I need to get more discussion going but I don't know what I want to talk about. I also need to start bringing my lit review together, but I need to see my tutor before I can start that so I can sort out the framework. As always, if you're a Torchwood fan and have ever considered going to Cardiff, please pop over to [livejournal.com profile] tw_tourists and tell me about it, tell your friends about it, etc. The latest entry is and I'm asking for your memories of your trips to Cardiff.

So it's 2012 already. Year of the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee, my baby brother ceasing to be a teenager and me ceasing to be a student. 2011 was a strange, peculiar and busy year, and 2012 promises to be much the same.

I'm just about to enter my last term of university. I have my dissertation to do by April, and two essays due in next Friday. Next term I'll be studying Eco-tourism and Managing A Diverse Workforce. I'm really looking forwards to this, but it's going to be heavy going I suspect.

As a reult, I'm putting all fic on hiatus until uni is done. I'll probably keep updating infrequently, but I'm not going to sign up to big bangs, bingos, exchanges or anything else. If I write, I'll write, but it's going to be a lot less frequent than it has been. Feels a bit weird. Fic has been my life for so long. I have plenty of ideas for when I come back, and hopefully it'll flow a bit easier with a break as well.

On the plus side, pretty much everything else is going on hiatus as well. I need to be more sensible with money, but not having time for trips will help with that, but I've decided that I am allowed to do what I like with my free time this term. Eat what I like, play Sims when I want to, flomp on Lali lots, that sort of thing. Don't know yet how much free time I'll have, but I intend to make the most of it rather than stressing myself out with more deadlines.

So there's that. I'm now going to do some uni work, then meet Lali in town to collect my phone from her and get some more textbooks for yet more uni work. I have left the two essays a bit late, but I get 2 weeks of nothing after they're done.

Probably see you in two weeks, in that case.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas or alternative celebration. We had a wonderful Christmas, and it went something like this )

I promise I will reply to comments as soon as I can. As I did at this time last year, I'm trying to rush out entries to fill another bingo between the TV and the eating. I have 4 days to write 14 entries though. Will do some memes in the new year.

Hugs and love to everyone
