Title: Easily Impressed
Characters: Sherlock and John
Genre: Gen
Rating: G
Inspiration: BBC
Summary: John still does that thing where he opens his mouth without thinking when Sherlock does something particularly brilliant. He doesn't plan to stop.
Contains:
Author's note: I've been bitten by the bug. Yay!
Beta:
Disclaimer: Torchwood and its environs, occurrences and persons belong to the BBC. The original characters have disowned me.
John thinks that he should really stop doing that. Lestrade's stopped looking at him in despair and started just rolling his eyes, which must be a bad sign, but Anderson is just getting more obnoxious about it. It's embarrassing on its own, as well, but somehow worth it when Sherlock looks at him like that.
So maybe it's not as impressive as unravelling a case from just the wear on the victim's boot, or reading a man's life story in his stride down the street, but some days it feels just as important. For all his ego, Sherlock actually lacks self-confidence, and it so often ends up bruised and battered after a case. He's convinced that people don't like him, which is probably true (although John's careful not to mention that), and it can leave him unwilling to leave the house for days afterwards. Even cases don't seem to be worth it, and John isn't quite getting through to Lestrade that coming around and spending some time with them outside work would be beneficial to all of them. It might knock some of Sherlock's sharp edges off and make him easier to work with, as well as make him more willing to help out.
So no, John hasn't even tried to stop exclaiming his amazement at Sherlock's incredible intellect. Anderson might hate it, but Sherlock stands just a little bit straighter, shows off that little bit more, and that's what's important.
Besides, Anderson hating it seems like a perfectly valid reason to do it, and not even Lestrade argued with him when he presented that argument.
