Ianto perched on the edge of Jack's desk and watched his hand crawl across the paper, finishing up the final report for the archives. His knuckles brushed against Ianto's leg, near the seam of his trousers, and lingered for a moment before hurrying on with the next line. “I won't be long,” he assured Ianto without looking up. “I just need to finish this section and sign it and then it's all done.”
“I'll wait up. Might as well get it filed tonight.” He leaned back on his hands to watch Jack working, wondering if he was like this at school or if he'd been an unholy terror who'd had to learn discipline with authority. “One more day over.”
“The sun is the same in a relative way...” Jack's hand stilled and he trailed off, then stabbed a full stop and scrawled his signature below it. “And finished.”
He accepted it, picked up the manilla folder that already held the other reports from the day and slipped Jack's summary report into the front. “It's February.”
“As of five minutes ago, yeah,” Jack agreed, frowning at the calendar. “The report still needs to be labelled January, though.”
“Not what I meant.” He waved the folder vaguely, as if it would help him explain. “It's a fortnight away... Valentine's Day, I mean.”
Jack drew a breath and nodded. “It is, yeah.” He flipped the page of his desk calendar over and let his hand fall against Ianto's leg again, pressing more than casually. “Are you asking...”
“Are you interested?” He held his breath.
A finger traced along the seam, just an inch or so backwards and forwards. “We don't get to spend a lot of time together outside work. I'd like to... more.”
Ianto dropped his hand on top of Jack's and squeezed it, then lifted it onto his thigh, earning him a grin. “I'll make the reservations, shall I?”
“You do dinner, I'll do...” Jack chuckled and shook his head. “Something.” His hand was warm against Ianto's thigh and rubbed gently up and down. “How about dinner at half five, and I'll find us something to do at eight?”
“Yep, sounds good.” He brushed his fingers against Jack's wrist and smiled down at their hands when Jack turned his wrist obligingly. “It's late.”
“It is.” Jack moved his hand to squeeze Ianto's fingers. “Are you coming down?”
“Yeah.” He lifted his gaze to Jack's face at last and returned his smile. “I'll just take this report down. You might have to warm me up when I get back.”
Jack laughed and stood up to kiss him. “Any day.”
