Ianto gestured to the glass in front of him and smiled. “Rhys,” he greeted, putting his phone away. “The next round's yours.”
“Aye, cheers mate. “Rhys settled into the other chair and took a deep drink from his pint, savouring it with evident relish. He sighed and looked around at the bar, then back at Ianto. “Say, they don't do food here, do they?”
“Bar food; chips and burgers and the like.” Ianto shrugged. “Not a lot, but enough if you're hungry. Has Gwen got you that rushed?”
“Oh, worse than that,” Rhys lamented. “He grimaced and set his pint down so that he could gesticulate in his displeasure. “She's gone all health conscious, you know? Wants to eat well for the baby, and if she's eating well then I have to as well, apparently. I'm not allowed to have chips or chocolate in the house, even. Oh, except when she gets a craving and I have to go to the shop to get them for her, of course. I've never eaten so much salad in my life!”
Ianto shook his head. “As long as she's getting a balanced diet. I could lend you a couple of the magazines that Jack's been reading; he's got one that's got a pretty good menu with fish and steak and stuff. Might encourage her to change her mind.”
“That'd be great, cheers mate.” He relaxed somewhat. “I'm scared of getting her the magazines now, never know what she's going to find next. Er... is Jack the same then? Mumzilla and all that?”
“Nope,” Ianto told him with a smirk, “Jack's all 'back in my day, women would make a concession to pregnancy by eating more, not different, and they worked until they started giving birth, then they took themselves off to a quiet corner, dropped their knickers and get on with it. And they'd have another one six months later!'” He snorted and shook his head, sipping at his pint. “Or something like that. It makes Alice look quite ill.”
“And how is she?”
“Coping, just about.” He sighed. “She's glad to have her dad around, because he never stops making a fuss of her, but she's... yeah, it's hard.”
“Oh, yeah. Well, of course it is.” Rhys shifted uncomfortably and gestured over his shoulder. “I'm just going to get some...”
“Yeah, sure.”
“You, er, you want anything?” he checked.
Ianto shook his head. “I'm alright, thanks.”
“Alright then.” He headed to the bar for a couple of minutes, returning with a small plastic box with an LED on one end. “Hey, aren't these neat?” he poked it into the middle of the table. “Make the customers do the running about themselves! I don't know, are we not paying enough for the food? Not that it's that much in here. Pretty reasonable, actually.”
Ianto smirked into his pint and let Rhys ramble himself to a stop about the canteen at university that had driven him to learning to cook because it was so awful, offering noises of agreement where they were required. Eventually, Rhys drew to a close and looked at him curiously. “Did you listen to a word of that?”
“All of it,” he assured him. “You seemed to be coping on your own, though.”
“Yeah, well. I had to, didn't I? Not like Gwen listens,” he scoffed. “And now, she's even worse!”
“Really?” Ianto tried to hide his amusement. “I didn't think that was possible.”
Rhys wagged a finger at him. “Watch what you're saying about my wife, mate. I've paid the time and earned the right. So how's Jack, anyway? How's he treating you?”
“More affectionate than ever,” he sighed, smiling fondly. “Doting on Alice, spoiling Mica and David absolutely rotten... Can't keep his hands off me.”
“And I think that's enough,” Rhys cut him off and Ianto laughed. “He's like a different man, though.”
“Well, except in the 'can't keep his hands off me',” Ianto agreed. “I'm glad he's rid of that pressure. It's a long road ahead of us, once we can start on it, though.”
“You'll make it.” Rhys took another sip of his pint and watched Ianto. “Whatever they throw at you, you'll make it.”
“That's the plan,” he agreed. “And whatever happens, we'll have each other. And the baby, and Alice... And the baby.”

Date: 2011-02-03 01:24 am (UTC)Babies left, right and centre though. No wonder Rhys is frazzled dealing with a pregnant Gwen, but Ianto seems to be handling things in his usual calm, well-organised way - and reaping the benefits of Jack's more affectionate behaviour =)
