Jack leaned back against the door and sighed. Another long, painful day running parallel operations in Cardiff, Glasgow, New York, Paris and London and, yet again, he'd got back to the house long after Ianto had gone to bed. Today, he'd called Jack to say goodnight whilst Jack was still in London, having a dick-measuring contest with a UNIT commander who hadn't liked taking orders from a man. He'd been reminded forcefully of Brigadier Bambera, before they got to know each other properly. Cardiff was probably running smoother because Ianto was letting whoever UNIT had sent think that they were in charge and secretly doing it all himself, and the others were either all-UNIT or with negligible Torchwood input. Scuttlebutt had it that Archie had poured himself into a whiskey glass a couple of nights before and not been seen since, but Jack wasn't supposed to know about that – UNIT were worried he'd try to take over up there.

He rubbed the heels of his hands into his eyes and realised that his keys were still in his fingers. With a growl, he dropped them into the bowl and kicked off his boots against the radiator, hanging his coat up with slightly more care and trudging through to the kitchen to get a stiff drink. His decanter, one of the pair that Ruth had bought for them for their first Christmas with the family, was standing next to one of the tumblers that matched it. He chuckled and poured himself a double measure, then raised his glass towards the bedroom. “Night, Ianto.”

It took him a moment to spot it, but he eventually realised that the magnetic poetry on the fridge had been cleared to form messages. He chuckled to himself and went to find out what Ianto had for him. The kit had been a gift from an acquaintance who had been close enough that gift-giving was required, but not so close that it had to be serious or well-thought-out. As silly as the gift seemed initially, Ianto had stopped using post-it notes around the house, leaving his messages for Jack attached to the fridge.

'NEED MILK' the first one read. Jack raised an eyebrow and checked the fridge, confirming that statement. He'd have to pop out and get some, or have toast in the morning. A glance at the clock made his mind up on that one.

The next one down read 'COLLECT RENT', and was fixed on top of the rental agreement for Jack's Roath flat, which was rented out to a group of students who weren't particularly good at getting their rent in on time, especially in the run up to the loan. He'd pester them for it before the loan came in, just to make sure that they did it as soon as they could.

'CAT ILL' Jack pulled a face. Just what he needed. Hopefully he was outside being ill somewhere, rather than somewhere in the flat or taking up Jack's half of the bed.

'OUT FOR DINNER TUESDAY' Jack smiled at that one and found the business card of one of their favourite restaurants to attach to it.

'LOVE' The 'YOU' had gone missing months ago, but the sentiment was still there. He found the '2' and put it next to the 'LOVE', then downed his drink and rinsed the tumbler out before creeping into bed without waking Ianto.

They always have a cat - all my Jacks have a 1963 E type Jag called Lady and all my Iantos have a black and white cat called Tybalt. I like being a bit meta XD

'CAT ILL' Jack pulled a face. Just what he needed. Hopefully he was outside being ill somewhere, rather than somewhere in the flat or taking up Jack's half of the bed.

But of course, the cat probably got sick in someone's shoe or in a traffic-heavy part of the house.

This is domestic goodness. I can totally see the boys leaving messages for each other this way. (Even though Jack probably leaves behind dirty ones.)

Cats do do that, don't they? Especially the intelligent ones. They're onto us...

Someone needs to buy Jack the sexy talk box of magnets for a birthday present. Maybe once the kids have left home, though...

Wonderful! Ianto may have gone to bed already, but he makes sure Jack knows all the important things! I love the way Jack replies to some of the messages, even though he will most likely speak to Ianto in the morning before Ianto gets to read the fridge! It's all so comfortably domestic and gently fluffy =)
