Jack stood at the window, watching people on the street below. They had no idea about what went on around them and below them every day, the battles for survival and the sacrifices made. Most days he was happy to keep it that way, even wanted to keep it that way. The ones who knew, his team, couldn't walk down a street without looking over their shoulder. He'd taken them and twisted them to his purpose, made them scared because people who were scared were more dangerous. More vulnerable.

The ancient Greeks had bound their armies together by love, promoted couples to the Sacred Band, the elite fighting force of men who would kill for each other, because dying is only useful once. Jack was too selfish to bind them like that, though. He wanted them to himself, wanted and needed them to love only him, and needed it to be for him, not for Torchwood. Gwen's relationship with Rhys was for Torchwood, it was their tie to the outside world that kept them all on the straight and narrow and held them back from sinking into Jack's maelstrom. Her love for Jack, though, just as with the others, was to keep Jack sane and safe, to keep his star burning and stop it collapsing in on itself to form an all-consuming black hole.

He couldn't live without them. He needed them like he needed oxygen.

So it was fear that bound them to Torchwood, and he kept them scared to keep them close. When they wandered, he reminded them what was out there and what they were protecting the world from, reminded them of who they were fighting for. Not for him, not this, because what could hurt him? But if Tosh's eyes grew too wondering at what she'd found, Jack would nudge the right piece of technology towards her and ask if she'd spoken to her family lately. She'd see the horror again and remember why she fought, and she'd come back to his side like a well trained dog. If Owen drifted away from the Hub too early and stayed in the bars too late, then Jack would have a story for him, or a body found at exactly the right time. The Rift would provide, just like it always did.

And Ianto. Broken, shattered, defeated Ianto, what did Jack really need to do to keep him to heel? He had given everything to Jack in love, and everything else had been washed away by fear. He was Torchwood's and Jack's entirely.

Jack turned back and sat on the edge of the bed, tracing his fingers over Ianto's face. The touch woke him up and he smiled up at Jack, catching his hand and pulling it away with a kiss to the knuckles. When he opened his arms, Jack folded into them gratefully, accepting what Ianto gave him, and tried to pretend that he was giving nothing back.

Because every time Ianto joined him on the streets Jack's heart constricted with fear, and every time he walked into the room it filled with warmth. Jack would kill to keep him safe, and grant mercy to keep his love. He would give him the moon and stars if he asked, steal fire from the Gods, and die a thousand times. He would sacrifice the world to save Ianto's life.

So he pretended, pretended that the web he'd woven hadn't trapped him, and that Ianto hadn't been the spider all along.

Oh, this is stunning!Just stunning! Jack's selfish manipulations are one of the things I dislike the most about him, but you put a twist on it at the end there that made me feel sorry for him. That last paragraph was gorgeous, but the last line, took my breath away.

Thank you :D
Jack is my hero, but he's certainly no saint, and not even the good guy all the time.

Oh wow, I loved this! That language and imagery at the end is just beautiful. And I love the line about Jack pretending he's giving nothing back. That's just such a great way to put it. *__*

Lovely, lovely fic! <3

OMG! this was just priceless!! love the reference to the Sacred Band of Thebes (Ancient History teacher here) and how well Jack knew his team and what he needed to have them near.
But Ianto, as usual, is different and he really is the one that can show Jack's weakness: Ianto an his love!

love this a lot!and many thanks for sharing this!

Thank you!
I was on Wikipedia the other day trying to find out when homosexuality was legalised in the UK, and ended up reading about the Sacred Band. It was so interesting, and made me think of Jack and Ianto.
Ianto, of course, had to be different

Really glad you liked it

Oh.

OH.

Yeah. That's pretty much it. Beautiful, introspective, thoughtful...I love it. "Her love for Jack, though, just as with the others, was to keep Jack sane and safe, to keep his star burning and stop it collapsing in on itself to form an all-consuming black hole." Amazing analysis, that.

I love. With all my heart. :)

i love you, and i love this... this... just... damn. you are truely a goddess, my dear friend. i'm not sure how you do it... how you so easily get into the mind of these wonderful characters, but you are there... and it is genius.
jack is such a wonderful yet hateful man. we all love and hate him... how could you not. he's lived so long... he's loved so much... but he's lost so much. my boy once said that he hated jack.. that he was such a terrible person, how could anyone like him.. but i dont think you can be jack harkness without that. i mean... living forever? how do you cope?
i think that you've absolutely hit the nail on the head with this. and i'm honored that you wrote it for me. thank you so much. i wish that i could properly thank you.. heh, with a real hug. but alas, 2 oceans and several continents separate us... so an e-hug will have to do. but i will be sending my love... :)
this really did cheer me up. and right now, i really, truely need that.
again. thank you. hehe, and sorry for getting a bit carried away there. its been that sort of day.
*very big hugs and lots of love*

Beautifully done. I love the idea of Jack binding the team to him, and Ianto binding Jack to him in return.

You've captured Jack's manipulative and selfish side and have still made him sympathetic. Well done.

I love this. I love how you show that Jack is manipulative because he needs to be, not because he wants to be; this is so in character for Jack, without letting him degenerate into dark!nasty!Jack. I agree completely with [livejournal.com profile] analineblue about that line being perfect.

More than anything else, I adore the Prometheus reference. It's one of my favourite myths, but I never realised before how amazingly appropriate it is for Jack. And you've made it even more marvellous by saying not only that Jack would steal fire and die a thousand times and generally defy the gods in all sorts of ways, but also that he would do all that for Ianto. You completely stole my breath away with this. Thank you. You're incredible.

Thank you! I'm really glad you liked it, and that I didn't push Jack too far.
I did an A level paper on the Prometheus legend, particularly on Frankenstein, and Torchwood is compeltely Jack's monster.
And I may need to go and write that, now.

Oh... I thought about the whole Modern Prometheus thing and I wondered who Jack's monster could be. Duh! I was taking it too literally and thinking of a person.
