He arrived early at their arranged meeting place, but found Jack already waiting for him. The other man was sitting on the edge of the fountain, in slacks and a casual tunic rather than his uniform, watching the crowd. Ianto hovered just out of his sight for a moment, fighting down the urge to turn on his heel and run, and wove through to him. “Jack,” he greeted him, “you're early.”
“So are you.” Jack stood and kissed Ianto on the cheek awkwardly – shyly. “I didn't know if you'd come at all.”
“An attractive guy tried to woo me with homeware and then stalked me to my work to ask me on a date,” he pointed out. “You had me intrigued at the matching teapot.”
Jack put his hand on Ianto's arm and steered him through the crowd towards the wide staircases that led to the food court on the floor above. He slid his hand to Ianto's back as they walked. “I didn't expect you to accept them,” he admitted at last. “It was just a silly idea I have when I was out shopping, and then I followed through on it and... I do things differently, and people tend to find it a bit weird.”
“It was a bit weird.”
“Oh.”
He reached back and rested his hand on Jack's hip. “It got my attention, though.”
Jack led him down to a busy coffee shop with stands of cakes and pastries in the window, where a waitress accepted Jack's crew card and seated them at a cosy table at the back. “Have you eaten here before?” he asked when she'd left them with the menus.
Ianto laughed and shook his head. “This is my first trip, remember? I can't even dream of eating on this level.”
“Trust my recommendations, then?” He held his hand out for Ianto's menu and smiled when he handed it over. “I don't eat here often. It's not the place to eat alone.”
“Don't you have someone else you could ask?” Ianto enquired, surprised. He had expected to be one of a number of the man's casuals – most people had a number of people with whom they shared a casual sexual relationship, and anyone as good looking as Jack tended to have a lot of them. It had never appealed to Ianto, but life in the Home System was different, and he'd been half hoping that Jack would want to take him under his wing in exchange for sex.
Jack, though, shook his head. “Not on this ship. I hate not knowing whether people are with me because they want to be with me or because they want to be with the power.”
“You're the Head Pilot,” Ianto murmured when he realised. “Don't you get lonely?”
“Very.”
The waitress returned and Jack turned to give her the menus back and order, whilst Ianto picked at the silverware. Silence descended, and Ianto dropped the fork when he realised what he was doing. “Why did you pick me?” he asked.
Jack shrugged again. “I wanted to apologise for upsetting you in Bowes the other day. I still don't know what I did, but you looked hurt, and then... it escalated. Does it bother you?”
“No. No, not really. I'm just...” He fished for the explanation. “New and wasn't expecting... this. Anything.” He let Jack take his hand and returned his smile shyly. “I didn't expect to meet someone like you here.”
“Someone like me?”
“Colonial.” He rubbed one finger against Jack's. “Patient.”
Jack laughed at that, tightening his grip on Ianto's hand. “I'm not often described as patient. Maybe it's just for things that are worth it.”
