13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Torchwood canon, that fantastic mythical beast. You'll find it in the supermarket between the unicorns and the bisexuals. I like to pick and choose my canon between the different versions of the story they've given us so that I end up with the version that suits the story best. I also have personal fanon things like Jack's E-Type Jaguar, Ianto's young-ish widowed mother who fancies Jack and the perpetual Tybalt. They might not appear in every story, and in some I will ditch them altogether if it works better that way, but most of my stories have that sort of background for them.
Has it changed how I see the source material? Yes. Torchwood is so much fun and so easy to write I can't believe that professionals didn't do a better job of it. Someone couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery, or it was a case of too many cooks (or a heavy-handed head writer who wasn't as good as he thinks he is).
14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
