fanficrants. This is how I see life in the Torchwood office as being for real, regarding use of Welsh.

Ianto had the Tourist Office door propped open to enjoy the cool sea breeze off the bay and let some natural light into the grubby office whilst he worked. It meant that he had to keep his work as innocent as possible, filling in the requisition forms for his recent trip to Tesco and then typing up reports on the computer that were easy to hide behind a full-screen slideshow of photos of Cardiff, but it was a chance he wasn't going to pass up.
A middle-aged couple entered and he tabbed to the slideshow, leaning forwards on the desk and smiling warmly. "Prynhawn da. Shwmai?"
The woman beamed back at him. "Da iawn diolch. Gei arweinydd at rhodfeydd i mewn Caerdydd?"
He blinked back at her and felt himself blushing. “I'm sorry, I don't actually speak Welsh.”
She looked disappointed, but said, “That's alright, dear. I suppose you're just too old to have learnt it in school?” Her accent was rich, Jack would have loved her.
“Yes, sadly. The English have a lot to answer for.” She laughed and he sighed. “It's very embarrassing, the only person in the office who speaks Welsh is my boss.”
“Oh?” she tilted her head. “Why embarrassing?”
Ianto bit his lip and bent the truth, just a little. “He's American.”
The look on her face was worth the white lie.
Author's Note:(Further to this, my curtainsfic future fixit AU involves Jack annoying Ianto by teaching their children to speak Welsh, and training their dogs in Welsh, and Ianto not being able to understand a word.)
