"I don't do casual," Jack had told him, reaching for his hand across the table. "Never have, don't want to start now." It was a warning, a chance for Ianto to get out if he wanted to and not get into something that could get messy and complicated and committed.
He accepted the glass of wine that Jack offered him, standing in the office-living room in Jack's suite, and let his fingertips brush against Jack's as he did so. "Thanks." He smiled and took a sip, enjoying the crisp fruit flavours. "I'm not going to pretend I know anything about it, but it tastes good."
Jack laughed again - he laughed a lot, Ianto had discovered, and it was always with genuine amusement or delight - and took Ianto's hand to lead him over to the sofa. The room was divided into three, with half the space given over to Jack's office and the other half split into a dining area with very minimal food preparation equipment and a comfortable lounge. A large vid screen occupied the wall above the dining-living area as well as the smaller one above the desk, and two doors led into the bedroom and the bathroom.
"Your living room is as big as the bunk room we share between four of us," Ianto commented when he'd looked his fill. "The perks of power."
"Oh, not sharing is one hell of a perk," Jack agreed. "Four's pretty luxurious, though. There were eight to a bunkroom on the first ship I served on - back when I was an engine maintenence skivvy - and there was just constant bang-bang-bang-bang-bang all night long." He stabbed with his hand to emphasise the story, and waved it vaguely when Ianto just looked confused. "Sex. All of them, all the time."
Ianto blushed bright red. "I think that's why we have unnaturally cold floors and really shallow bunks."
Jack's hand splayed across his thigh and his thumb rubbed gently along the weave of his trousers. "You're not about to tell me that your culture wait until they're bonded before sex, I hope?"
He smiled and leaned closer, so that his lips nearly touched Jack's. "We don't. We wait until we've decided we like someone first, and then..."
"Then?"
"We get to know them. Thoroughly." He closed his eyes and admitted, "I'm pretty nervous right now."
Jack's fingers brushed against his cheek and Ianto parted his lips against his soft kiss. He shifted closer to Ianto and wrapped one arm around his waist to hold him. "What are you nervous of?"
"The last time..." he trailed off and had to pull away from Jack before he could try again, twining his fingers together between his knees. "Last time, the last person I trusted, she laughed."
"Ianto?"
He sat back again and took Jack's hand, guiding it under his shirt to rest on his abdomen. His breath hitched when Jack's fingers strayed, and he closed his eyes tightly when Jack pushed his shirt up to see. "I'm from the outermost colony," he explained defensively. "It's not... it's not the same there as it is here."
Jack pushed him back gently, and bent over to press his lips against the soft, yielding flesh of Ianto's abdomen, tracing the edge of his belly button with gentle kisses. "The way we came to be is never something to be ashamed of," he assured him as he sat up again, "and certainly not something to be mocked."
His hand rubbed across Ianto's abdomen, around his waist and pressed against his back, splaying below his ribs, whilst Ianto tangled his fingers in Jack's hair and kissed him fiercely. They wrapped around each other and settled into the sofa, stretched out side by side.
