Jack had a window above his bed. The wall curved gently so that the window arched over them and showed the glittering expanse of space and, just visible in the far distance, the lights of the Gamma sector. He'd lifted the visor as they basked in the afterglow, and moved the pillows to the foot of the bed so that he could lie back and Ianto could curl against him and see out. His hand stroked down Ianto's side, from his ribs to his hip, and he used it to pull him closer. “Another perk,” he said softly. “Maybe the best.”
“How do you sleep with this to look at?”
He sighed and squeezed Ianto tighter. “I don't.”
Ianto let Jack pull him closer; it was hard to know how to respond, how much Jack would be comfortable with Ianto acknowledging that he knew. He rested his head on Jack's chest and kept looking out at the stars. “You must get lonely.”
“I do.”
“Can you see your home?” He raised his head to look at Jack. “I mean...”
Jack was silent and troubled, but his hand kept stroking up and down Ianto's side whilst his eyes gazed into the distance. Eventually he stilled his hand and looked down at Ianto with a sad smile. “I was born on the first world my people settled,” he told Ianto, “a very long time ago. It's a human colony planet now. Our colony fell to the Fadria Empire.”
“That's...” He sat up and looked down at Jack. His history was rusty, but he knew how long ago they had driven back the Fadria Empire and colonised the planets they had been occupying. The novels and films he'd consumed as a teenager had depicted the Fadria as a ruthless race of slave traders who had devastated the worlds they had seized, and the Human Imperial forces as heroic liberators – history, though, was written by the winners. Whatever had happened, it was long before his own home had even been discovered. “That's the Odin Sector – Ask and Embla.”
“I came from what you call Embla,” Jack confirmed. “I haven't seen it in so long.”
“But Odin has been settled for centuries.” He shook his head and leaned back into Jack. “How long is it since you saw your home?”
“Not since it stopped being my home. I was stupid, young... Goddess, so young... I did something I shouldn't have, looked into something I shouldn't have, it doesn't matter what. It was just after we returned to our primary planet, when we'd lost everything...” He closed his eyes tightly. “The Council banished me.”
“I don't understand,” he admitted, straightening up to hold Jack and comb his fingers through his hair. “Why?”
“I broke one of the most sacred rules of our religion.” Jack sighed and pulled himself away from Ianto to hide his face in his hands. “And the Goddess cursed me, on top of being banished.” He turned to smile at Ianto. “I can't explain it in short. Maybe if we have time...”
Ianto reached out for him again. “I'll give you as much time as you need.” Next chapter
