Jack looked up from his file and waited, listening to the noises of the early morning around the flat. Two clocks ticked out of synch in the kitchen and the bathroom, the fridge and boiled hummed, wooden beams creaked as they settled. Another whimper came form the bedroom and Jack got up to follow it, turning on lights and opening doors as he passed down the short corridor to the master bedroom.

The king-sized bed took up most of the room, leaving just enough room at the foot for the drawers on the chest of drawers to open fully, although you had to stand next to it or lie on the bed or your legs would get trapped, and space to stand in front of the wardrobe and change with it open down the far side of the bed from the door. Jack flicked the light on in there and sighed at the sight of Ianto, flushed and drenched in sweat, completely entangled in the thin sheet. He moaned and thrashed to get free, but only managed to tie himself in further knots, as always.

It only took a moment to tug the sheet out from under Ianto's leg, and then he did the rest of the work himself, twisting and pushing at it until it was in a heap at the foot of the bed, but he was no closer to waking up or ridding himself of the nightmare.

Jack knelt on the bed and rested his hand on Ianto's stomach, rubbing it in a soothing circle to calm him. His skin was hot and clammy, and muscles jumped against Jack's palm in an arrhythmic staccato. Bending carefully, Jack feathered kisses across his cheek and murmured softly. “Come on Ianto, wake up for me.”

Ianto moaned and thrashed again, knocking against Jack ineffectually, but rolled towards his touch and grabbed his hand to hug it like a teddy bear. It was at once adorable and awkward. Jack sighed and laid down to get the best angle that didn't break his arm and started stroking Ianto's hair with his free hand, kissing his lips softly. “Come on, I'm being annoying here.”

It seemed for a while like he'd settle down without waking up, but Jack felt Ianto tense against him suddenly and relax gradually, opening his mouth against Jack's gentle kisses to invite more. Jack Harkness had never been one to turn down genuine affection knowingly, so he tugged on his still-captured wrist and leaned into the kiss, stroking his tongue against Ianto's and tasting peppermint toothpaste.

“You know, I can't consent if I'm asleep,” Ianto pointed out, still holding Jack's wrist.

Jack shook it and sighed, tilting his head back against the mattress. “And you're taking my hand prisoner as punishment?”

“Don't be stupid,” Ianto scoffed. “I'm just preventing you from tickling me.”

“Would I?” Jack affected hurt.

Ianto hugged his hand tighter and rolled onto his back to yawn. “I have issues.”

“Yeah...” Jack gave up and rolled towards his arm, snuggling against Ianto's side with his head on his shoulder. “What was it this time?”

“I was being pursued by a marshmallow, but I couldn't run.” He shrugged the shoulder that Jack wasn't lying on. “And then I ran into it and it was sticky and I couldn't move my legs.”

“Nasty.”

“Yeah.”

Jack kissed his shoulder. “You know that was the blanket, right?”

He chuckled and combed his fingers through Jack's hair. “It usually is. Are you going to stay here now?”

“If you want me to.” He pushed himself up onto one elbow and kissed Ianto again softly. “You sort the sheet, I'll turn the lights out.”

“Jack...” He turned back at Ianto's call and raised an eyebrow. “Thank you.”

He smiled and raised his eyebrows. “Really, Ianto. If I can't save you from the bedding, what kind of superhero am I?”
