[MASTERPOST] Pay the Man: A Barrissoka fanvid

PAY THE MAN

a Barriss/Ahsoka fanvid
AO3TumblrFull Download

The war that brought them together also broke them apart, sending them down paths that seem irreconcilable. Yet it’s only after they’ve parted ways that they may, at last, truly understand one another.

This is my first fanvid, a huge passion project. Many thanks to [personal profile] lizardjay for betaing. If you do give it a watch, I'd love to know your thoughts! :) Further ramblings are below, but you definitely don't need to read them to watch the vid. ^^
It was summer of 2017 when I heard "Pay the Man" and immediately felt it was a Barrissoka song. Scenes from Clone Wars flashed vividly in my mind as I listened to the lyrics about war, faith, love, light, and darkness. I even scribbled a few thumbnails/sketches in an effort to capture what I saw so clearly in my mind's eye. However, at that time my video editing experience was rudimentary and limited to Windows Media Player (RIP). I also did not know how to get the source material on my computer.

Five years later, summer of 2022, I suppose I became suddenly convinced of my own free will, specifically when it came to making my shippy AMV daydreams a reality. I feverishly browsed guides and resources on vidding. I even managed to assemble the majority of the vid! Then, well, life happened. And the Star Wars fandom began to bum me out. I swore I wouldn't return to the canon unless a couple of my most beloved characters showed up, one of them being Barriss. Y'all know what happened. I had to swing back around for Tales of the Empire as soon as I heard she appeared in it.

And now, a further three years on—2025!—I finally had the technology, time, and TBH canon material to finish it up. Past me had left a few spots empty, having struggled to find the right clips. The late Clone Wars episodes plus Tales of the Empire gave me just the extra juice I needed to fill out the vid. So, even though it feels like a convoluted and overly long journey to get there (8 fucking years from ideation to completion T_T), maybe it was for the best.

(The last fannish project I embarked on with this intensity was my four-part fanmix for Murder Most Unladylike. I guess F/F best-friend ships bring this out in me.)

✿ Welcome to my intro post! ✿

Figured it would be good to have something like this stickied! Perhaps it will be more interesting in a future version, but hopefully this covers the essentials:

Hi! I'm Mossy, she/her, 18+, living in the USA. I engage with fandom primarily through reading/writing fic, appreciating others' art and meta, and Thinking of Scenarios while lying in bed. Also sometimes fic exchanges. When the mood strikes, I may create fanworks in other mediums, like fanmixes or fanvids.

My current main fandoms are Yakuza/RGG (Y0 through Y3), Hello From the Magic Tavern, and Pokémon (a hodgepodge of the games, anime, and manga). I still have opinions and feelings about canons, characters, and ships beyond that list, though.
An incomplete list in no particular order:
Barriss(/Ahsoka) from Star Wars, Wolf 359, Wooden Overcoats, Stellar Firma, Pokémon, Murder Most Unladylike, Star Wars KOTOR 1, the Penumbra Podcast (both Second Citadel and Juno Steel), Holland/Kell from Shades of Magic, Winter Ihernglass from The Shadow Campaigns, Finn(/Kylo) from Star Wars ST, Hux(/Kylo) from Star Wars ST, Miraculous Ladybug, Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus, The Adventure Zone Balance, The White Vault, Neoscum, Malevolent, Archive 81, Girl in Space, Rusty Quill Gaming, Beef and Dairy Network Podcast, The Cryptonaturalist, Succession, Severance, Beyond Evil.

On this journal you will find ramblings about fandom and writing, miscellaneous life updates, masterposts for more ambitious projects, and old exchange letters. And maybe other stuff. Rec lists? Meta? We'll see. I'm used to doing fandom solo, but trying to share my thoughts more often instead of keeping them all in my head and lurking. ^^'

As for my friending/commenting policy, anyone is welcome to comment on my posts, whether new or old. I'm looking for more fandom friends! If I subscribe to you, don't feel obligated to subscribe back.

I do expect to post a fair number of access-locked entries, for things that feel too ramble-y. I may also access-lock entries that contain potentially identifying information (even just a whiff, as I am paranoid). But this is mostly a preventative measure against random drive-bys and search indexing, and access is granted very easily—basically if we've interacted once or twice. :) If we've interacted a few times and I still haven't given you access, feel free to give me a nudge as I've probably just forgotten.

Other places I can be found include [tumblr.com profile] mossy-bench and Mossy_Bench on AO3. Happy to share my Discord too, just PM to ask. My Twitter is defunct and my Pixiv is just to bookmark beautiful art.

If you'd like to say hello, you are more than welcome to leave a comment below! :D <3

Code deploy happening shortly

Per the [site community profile] dw_news post regarding the MS/TN blocks, we are doing a small code push shortly in order to get the code live. As per usual, please let us know if you see anything wonky.

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

WIPBB Big Bang/Reverse Bang 2025 - Bragging Rights Template & AO3 Collection Link

I was going to post this on the 1st but I, in my infinite round of rotten luck, injured my foot today so I'm probably going to be sleeping a lot to stay off my foot. So it goes up today!

On your posting day, there is a specific form we would like you to fill out to post your fanworks. It allows you bragging rights for finishing your fic/art, and also links to the location of your fic (it should be up somewhere like AO3/FF.net/your personal Tumblr under a tag/any other fic or journal community) in its completion*. We also have an AO3 collection for this round where you can post the AO3 postings of your fic and art to.

These are the bragging rights form for WIPBB authors/WIPRB artists:

Project Title:
Fandom:
Link:
Summary:
Warnings:
Characters:
Pairings:
When I Started:**
How I Lost My Shit:**
How I Finished My Shit:**

You can submit your post to the Dreamwidth and Tumblr blogs as early as you like (but DW will only allow you to have one post in the queue at a time, so be aware if you have multiple posts to make!) and we'll queue it to post on the date you've claimed. Don't worry about tagging posts; we will use a system we've determined.

And don't worry, WIPBB artists & WIPRB authors, we've got you covered, too! You get your own separate post, though you are welcome to just have your author post your art on their post if you want. If you don't plan on making your own separate post to the comm, you still must do the check in below. In this post, you can share things like:

Project Title:
Fandom:
Link: (or you can post the art here, too!)
Warnings:
Bragging Rights: **

Your posting day is all about you. So celebrate! Don't be modest! Shout it to the world! We all come from so many fandoms, but we all came together to finish our shit, and that's something to shed a proud tear over.

And here are easy to copy formats with HTML formating:

WIPBB AUTHORS/WIPRB ARTISTS:

WIPBB ARTISTS/WIPRB AUTHORS:

(You will have to delete the <*br> tags by hand and add breaks, unfortunately, Dreamwidth does not like the textboxes...)

When you finish posting your final chapter, post your bragging rights to the WIPBB Tumblr and/or the Dreamwidth blog, and then feel free to add your project to the WIP Big Bang 2025 collection on AO3.

We are also requiring a Google forms check in to make it easier for mods to track posts. To fill out the check in form, you will need the email and check in ID you used to sign up, as well as a link to your bragging rights post/finished project. All participants except pinch hitters need to fill it out! You should have received an auto-generated confirmation of your sign up with your check in ID if you need to double check what you used, but if you didn't or lost it, please email us at wipbigbang@gmail.com and we'll find that info for you. Please fill out a different form for each fic/art you post.

The final check in form can be found at https://forms.gle/kNzALWPdi2Mea1am6.

*If for some reason, you can't post this yourself, you can always email this information to the mods, and we'll post it for you. You can also post via proxy, just let us know that you will be doing so.
** These are optional but encouraged

Y3 Hang-ups, Y2 Sock-ups

This month most of my fannish energy was hyper-focused on vidding, though that project is now mere inches from being complete! (Expect a more exhaustive post about it in the near future.) I think I'll then redirect my attention to a) finishing Yakuza 3, and b) finishing the damn RyuDai fic. The latter does raise a problem, however...

Fic-writing and dithering about socks
I probably shouldn't even talk about the RyuDai fic given how far it is from completion. I am 5.5k words in, which isn't nothing!! But for it to be what I want it to be, I think it'll need to be about double that in length.

Historically, I have kept my main AO3 account rated G through M, and posted all porn to a separate sock account. The Yakuza fandom has put me in a pickle, though, because generally speaking, all of my fic ideas for the fandom are rated E. So it's kinda like, either I can never post Yakuza fic to my main account despite yapping about it here a whole lot, or I break my rule of not putting porn on my main account. Or I suppose I could post it to my sock but then still talk about the fic here, therefore linking the two accounts. I recognize that this is a very trivial thing to agonize over. I'm curious what you would do in my shoes!

Reasons to keep the accounts separate:
- There is an infinitesimal chance that someone I know IRL who may or may not remember my Tumblr, could then easily find my entire namespace fannish presence. This seems unlikely, given that said acquaintance last saw my Tumblr more than 10 years ago, and I have changed my URL/handle since then.
- Writing porn feels incredibly vulnerable and I vacillate rapidly between liking what I wrote and feeling keen embarrassment. I've gotten nice feedback on some of my PWPs but I think I still struggle to own it. Tossing it into the void feels a lot easier.
- Comparing stats between the accounts is kind of fascinating.

At the moment, the solution I'm leaning towards is maybe posting them to a pseud on my main account, on a case-by-case basis. The more involved, character-driven stuff can be on Mossy_Bench, the purely trashy iddy stuff can be on the sock. That feels like something I could live with. Though it doesn't take care of the lingering paranoia of people I know IRL finding my porn. Ah well. I foresee I will have pleeeenty of time to mull over this yet.

Now onto more general video game ramblings!

Positive thoughts about Yakuza 3
I am actually ridiculously close to reaching the climax of the plot. It's crazy how much longer it's taking me to finish compared to the other games in the series I've played through. Overall, I like a lot of aspects of the game—I think the orphanage story is sweet; I enjoy exploring Okinawa's map; the substories are delightful as ever; Rikiya is such an eager loyal puppydog of a man that I have found myself shipping him with Kiryu not so much in a romantic sense as much as a Kiryu needs to take him to poundtown sense; I love any and all Daigo content.

Apprehension about Yakuza 3
From what I can tell, RGG plots tend to be a bit ridiculous at baseline, but Y3's soapiness (secret twin brother of deceased loved one!) goes a bit far—and ends up being weirdly less entertaining. Also, the chasing mechanic is miserable. After I proved to myself that I could do it if I wanted to, I gave myself to permission to switch chase scenes to easy difficulty. Because fuck that.

I know Mine/Daigo is a hugely popular ship thanks to this game, and I haven't yet gotten to the reveal that launched the ship. All I have to say is that Mine Yoshitaka is an insanely pretty man, especially in cut scenes. The one where he brings over a briefcase containing [redacted for mild spoilers]? Veeeery nice. I'm just curious how fans of the ship end up characterizing Daigo. Because personally, I like him as a hot-headed, repressed, emo failure who also manages to be a decent and charismatic leader when he's called to be. But that hot-mess core is essential. That is: don't turn him into bland serious competent chairman pls.

(Why yes I do have a new icon. Thank you for noticing!)

Mississippi site block, plus a small restriction on Tennessee new accounts

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Finally, I'd like to thank every one of you who's commented with a message of support for this fight or who's bought paid time to help keep us running. The fact we're entirely user-supported and you all genuinely understand why this fight is so important for everyone is a huge part of why we can continue to do this work. I've also sent a lot of your comments to the lawyers who are fighting the actual battles in court, and they find your wholehearted support just as encouraging and motivating as I do. Thank you all once again for being the best users any social media site could ever hope for. You make me proud and even more determined to yell at state attorneys general on your behalf.
